Madonna Wears Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci For Superbowl
While a stunning, preternaturally toned Madonna belted out “Like a Prayer” during her 12-minute set at the Superbowl half-time performance today, I had my own prayer silently going out to God that went something like this:
“Dear God…” (pause for dipping homemade deep-fried tortilla chips into homemade guacamole)
“…Please let me look as good as Madonna when I am 50, and be able to rock a pair of thigh-high boots like that…” (crunch crunch)
“I promise not to eat another one of those homemade eggrolls (also deep fried) sitting next to the guacamole in front of me.”
I am not sure that my prayers were heard above the din of my crunching and the excitement in the room, but Madonna most certainly answered the prayers of both expectant viewers and Superbowl producers alike when she turned out a glittering show devoid of any wardrobe malfunctions.
Quite to the contrary, Madonna displayed utter wardrobe magnificence in a three-costume set by Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci, which incorporated signature Givenchy references such as bold leopard print, embellishments, graphic placements and evocative cuts.
The Material Girl channeled Roman royalty and emerged from her throne (pulled by sweaty, half-naked Roman gladiators, of course) in a gold cape hand embroidered with gold metal cut-out pieces, studs, crystals, sequins and paillettes and lined in leopard-print chiffon.
Underneath the cape, Madonna wore a black mini dress (clearly, she had not been eating chips and guac) in silk cady, worn with a leopard print short cape in silk charmeuse also hand-embroidered with gold metal cut out pieces, studs, crystals, sequins and paillettes and finished with a black python belt.
Madonna sang crowd pleasers (Vogue, Music, Express yourself) and her new single (Give me all your luvin featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.) for the first time. While all breasts remained enclosed during this half-time performance, M.I.A. did incite a brief moment of producer panic when she flipped off the camera causing NBC to do a quick screen scramble. And I held my breath when the heel of Madonna’s thigh-high boots got stuck in the rafters and caused a brief stumble for the singer. But the crisis was averted.
All of the costumes were changed on stage, from the cape that served as
the performances opener, to the embellished black silk cady coat that completed the three-costume set. (Note to readers: Silk cady is an incredibly luxe silk fabric, originally produced in the French region of Languedoc, for couture and evening gowns.) Cee Lo Green, whom she performed with while wearing this coat, wore a black robe of his own which leaned more toward monk chic, minus the chic.
Now had this been Lady Gaga, the Roman theme might have veered more toward Caligula than couture. And while we hope to see Gaga performing at the Superbowl soon, we thought Madonna and Tisci made a winning team and made up for a rather snoozy game!
