Monday Muse: MAC Cosmetics Celebrates 50 Years of Star Trek
Believe it or not, 2016 marks 50 years of Star Trek‘s exploration, adventure and badass women. To celebrate, the sci-fi franchise has teamed with MAC Cosmetics for a makeup collaboration that’s sure to take beauty geeks into new territory to excuse us boldly go where no man has gone before.
The 25-piece collection is set to hit stores this fall, but MAC is giving hardcore fans a chance to pre-sale their picks on Thursday, June 21, at the brand’s San Diego’s Gaslamp district shop to coincide with Comic-Con.
Why Star Trek? It may seem niche for a brand that’s known for collaborating with mainstream beauties like Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga and Disney, but Star Trek aligns perfectly with the brand’s creed of “all ages, all races, all sexes” by celebrating not only women of all shapes, sizes, colors and ethnicities, but even alien species.
“Star Trek is an iconic pop culture phenomena whose storylines pushed gender and racial boundaries,” says MAC Cosmetics Senior Vice President and Group Creative Director James Gager.
The collection of MAC lipstick, Lipglass, pressed pigment eyeshadow, and Studio Nail Lacquer is heavy on glitter and bold shades, but trust us when we say it’s not just for cosplayers. The campaign, which is fronted by stylized depictions of Commander Deanna Troi, Uhura, Vina the Orion slave girl, and Seven of Nine drawing from various seasons of Star Trek, from Deep Space Nine to Next Generation and more. While we would love to have seen Captain Janeway included, she was more about utility than glam (and let’s not forget about beauty icon Guinan, played by one Whoopi Goldberg). So, while we polish up our tricorders, we’ll be waiting impatiently for fall to come, which brings us closer to getting our hands on this collab and to the premiere of a new season of Star Trek. Get ready to set your phasers to stunning.
