Ben Minkoff’s First Step in Expansion is Footwear

A look from Ben Minkoff’s fall 2015 collection.

While Rebecca Minkoff — the brand, not the San Diego born designer — has been expanding at a breakneck pace, with store openings, expanded offerings in her own line and a devoted fan base that includes bloggers, real life girls and fashion editors alike, the men’s side of the business, Ben Minkoff, has been a little more quiet. But that’s about to change, because Uri Minkoff, Rebecca’s brother and the brand’s CEO, has taken on Ben Minkoff as his own pet project (he’s been behind the scenes at Ben Minkoff since 2013) and for fall 2015, he’s expanding the line beyond bags with plans to launch a full range. First up, however, is footwear.

The first delivery of shoes includes dress and casual styles, including sneakers — the shoe of the moment, and Minkoff’s designs are sure to be spotted on the peacocks of fashion week in about 30 seconds — and boots.

The designs are classic, taking inspiration from iconic sneakers such as PF Flyers and Converse, but elevating their design with rich leather and thoughtful details. The dress shoes and boots feature luxe full grain leather and include monkstraps, wingtips and more. One hybrid design, which combines the look of a classic wingtip with the sole of rubber sneaker is one of the best iterations we’ve seen of the function-meets-fashion trend that’s been a menswear touchstone for the last few seasons.

The Ben Minkoff shoe collection is priced between $150 and $300, hitting that sweet spot between fast fashion or department store lines and designer brands — the exact contemporary price point that’s made Rebecca Minkoff such a hit. The new bags feature a softer shape and new, deeply saturated colors. Ringing in at around $325, they’ll also be hitting the sales floor soon. And what’s next? There’s no word yet on any additional product offerings, but if Ben is going to grow up and be like his big sister, we’re expecting plenty of big things to come.
