Monday Muse: Gwen Stefani Teams with Urban Decay

Gwen Stefani at the Urban Decay launch

If there’s one musician with a look that’s as iconic as her sound, it’s none other than Gwen Stefani. Sure, Ms. LAMB has gone through plenty of transformations, but her trademark platinum blonde locks and bold red lip have been with her since the days of Tragic Kingdom. Through the dip-dyed pink hair, the Harajuku phase, the chola era and those questionable bindi days, Stefani’s kept that hair icy and those lips crimson. So it comes as no surprise that she teamed with fellow Orange County brand Urban Decay for her first foray into color cosmetics. After all, that signature lip color is Urban Decay’s Gash €” it just goes to show just how far back these two O.C. icons go.

The story goes that Gwen loved Gash so much that she contacted Urban Decay’s Wende Zomnir to express her devotion. Well, after that, it’s pretty much history. Stefani has been a fan of UD ever since, so the collaboration was a long time coming for both of them. Together, Zomnir and Stefani worked to create a palette of colors that not only exemplified Stefani, but contained shades that she’d actually use. So from that idea €” practicality and pretty colors €” the UD | Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette ($58) was created.

The palette contains 15 shades, with plenty of neutrals for Gwen fans that don’t want to go all-out Harajuku. Look closely, too, and you’ll see a referecnce to the No Doubt tune €œMagic€™s in the Makeup€ on the palette€™s mirror. In addition to working with Zomnir on the shades (We’d love to have been invited to those slumber parties!), Stefani even named the shades in the palette and helped create the mod-meets-glam packaging.

A dozen of the 15 shades are brand-new, while the remaining three are Stefani’s faves from the Urban Decay eyeshadow collection. With names like “Anaheim,” “1987,” and “Bathwater,” the shades are a throwback to Stefani’s roots as well as the tunes we all grew up listening to. Fans of bold shades will love “Harajuku” and “Danger,” a pair of bold colors that’ll turn any run-of-the-mill smoky eye into something stage-ready. And as for that signature cat-eye flick? Practice makes perfect, because Gwen’s not giving us tips on that just yet. In true Urban Decay style, the formula is designed to be true to color, stay put all day and be as blendably smooth as a Stefani ballad. So go bold or be true to your neutral-loving self. Expressing yourself through your eye look is what Gwen is all about €” and be sure to share your looks with her via #UDxGwen. We hear she double-taps her favorite looks.

And even better? There’s more to come. Expect lip colors (what else?!) in spring of 2016.

The UD | Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette is available at Sephora.
