L.A. Favorite Mohawk General Store Expands with Mohawk Man

Mohawk Man

Since the store’s opening four and a half years ago, Mohawk General store has been bringing under-the-radar designers to the forefront of L.A.’s fashion scene. Kevin and Bo Carney, the husband and wife duo behind the store, sought to bring a global assortment of goods to discerning shoppers here in Los Angeles. This past holiday season, the pair even brought in home goods and gift items with the Mohawk Holiday Market in 2012, which brought together handmade terrariums and Mast Brothers chocolate bars. Now, the Mohawk family continues to grow with the debut of Mohawk Man, a guys-only retreat that brings the best of the menswear selection at Mohawk into its own spotlight.

Inside the airy, gallery-inspired store, there’s an actual gallery. The first exhibit, which is set to debut this Thursday, May 30th, features Los Angeles architecture as shot by Nicholas Alan Cope — alongside the edited selection of clothing that Mohawk is known for. Hailing from Japan are wallets and small accessories from Comme des Gar§ons, which share a table with Canadian label Want Les Essentials de la Vie’s rucksacks and soft-sided briefcases. Hanging below the photos are basics from well-known brands such as France’s beloved A.P.C.

and shoes from Generic Surplus.

The store isn’t all about overseas labels though, because among the global selection are American stalwarts such as Gitman Brothers Vintage and celeb favorite Save Khaki. And since Mohawk has always been an incubator for local labels, L.A. is represented by options from sunglass savant Garret Leight.

The store is a straightforward, no-frills shop. (It’s just a stone’s throw away from the existing Mohawk General Store.) It’s a refreshing change from the over-styled shops that are popping up everywhere, and guys will appreciate the straightforward blackened metal racks and no-nonsense merchandising. (But don’t be surprised to see a Mexican skull curio here or there.)

Mohawk Man also features a dedicated pop-up space for visiting designers. The first one to grace Mohawk Man is Our Legacy, a Swedish brand known for tailored goods and basics rendered in soft suede. And fittingly for L.A.’s more indie Eastside, the space also includes a DJ booth, which will satisfy the crowd of musicians, artists and fashion-minded men that have been frequenting Mohawk General Store since its inception.

Mohawk Man is located at 4017 West Sunset Blvd., in Los Angeles. For more information, visit www.mohawkgeneralstore.com.
